Communication Manager Release History
From Jaymzworld
Avaya™ Communication Manager 5.2 (05/09)
Naming
Avaya Communication Manager is renamed as Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager from Avaya Communication Manager Release 5.2.
Enhancements
- Processor Ethernet for duplex servers
- Extension of Processor Ethernet capability for S8720 and S8730 duplicated critical reliability servers. Allows H.248 media gateways, H.323 endpoints and SIP endpoints to connect directly to the server’s Ethernet interface. Eliminates need for an expensive G650 gateway and allows a cost-effective H.248 gateway to be used instead, providing up to 50% hardware cost savings.
- S8510 Embedded Voice Messaging
- Integrated voice messaging (previously supported on S8300 and S8400) is now available on the S85x0 media server providing a cost-effective messaging solution for medium-size customers.
- S8400 Enterprise Survivable Server
- It is now possible to configure S8400 as an Enterprise Survivable Server (ESS) to provide enterprise-wide disaster recovery.
- Increased endpoint and trunk capacity
- On S87x0-series servers IP (H.323) endpoint capacity is increased from 12,000 to 18,000. SIP capacities are increased from 12,000 to 18,000 endpoints and from 5,000 to 7,000 trunks.
- G430 Gateway
- The G430 is a new H.248 media gateway intended for branches and sites with 2 to 150 users. The G430 has the same features as G250, G350 and G450 gateways, including SLS (standard local survivability) integrated in the gateway.
- Survivable SIP Gateways
- Solution support for small, low-cost third-party and customer-installed SIP gateways and Avaya 96xx phones enables remote branches to stay connected during WAN outages.
- New telephony features
- supports new telephony user features for EMEA market.
Port Network survivability
When the network fails, IP connected port networks experience disproportionately long outages from short network disruptions. The enhanced feature now provides customers using IP connected Port Networks with less downtime in the face of IP network failures.
The feature lessens the impact of network failures by:
- Improving TCP recovery times that increase the IPSI-PCD socket bounce coverage time from the current 6-8 seconds range for the actual network outage to something closer to 10 seconds.
- Modifying the PKTINT recovery action after a network outage to entail a warm interrupt rather than a PKTINT application reset (hardware interrupt)). This prevents H.323 IP telephones from having to re-register and/or have their sockets regenerated. This minimizes recovery time from network outages in the range of 15-60 seconds.
- This feature also monitors the IPSI-PCD socket and helps in identifying and troubleshooting network related problems.
IP Server Interface (IPSI) administration enhancements
The TN2312BP IP Server Interface (IPSI) administration enhancements enable you to administer and manage Quality of Service (QoS) and Ethernet interface settings parameters using the SAT interface.
The following IPSI related parameters are now administrable:
- Set the values of QoS parameter fields (DiffServ and 802.1p) on System Parameters IP Server Interface screen.
- Download QoS parameters to all IPSI boards
- Send QoS parameters or Ethernet interface settings to IPSI boards in the following cases:
- On submission of Add IP Server Interface or Change IP Server Interface screen
- Whenever Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager server connects to IPSI
- Set the values of Ethernet interface fields (Auto, Speed, or Duplex) on IP Server Interface screen. Speed and Duplex fields appear on IP Server Interface screen, if Auto field is set to n.
- Change to DHCP address on the System Management Interface (SMI) Web page
- Changes to IPSI IP addresses (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway address) on the IP Server Interface screen
- Note
- The initial IPSI IP address must be a static IP address.
The IPSI and packet control driver (PCD), parts of the Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager system, use capabilities exchange messages to share exchange of QoS, Ethernet settings, and IP address information with each other to support the IPSI administration feature. In this feature, QoS settings are standardized to communicate between the IPSI and Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager.
Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager generates a warning alarm if PCD finds any discrepancies in Quality of Service (QoS) and Ethernet interface settings parameters. The IPSI administration inter-operates with Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager Release 5.0 or earlier by using the pre-existing QoS and administration interface.
- Note
- The IPSI firmware version 46 or greater is required to support Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager.
New command to handle Main Server and LSP Server split registrations
Split registrations occur when resources on one network region are registered to different servers. For example, after an outage activates Local Survivable Processors (LSPs), telephones in a network region register to the main server or Enterprise Survivable Server (ESS), while the LSP registers the gateways. The telephones registered with the main server are isolated from their trunk resources. You can set the media gateway recovery rules to Immediately to handle split registrations.
Avaya Aura™ Communication Manager Release 5.2 provides a new option to manage split registrations. Activate the feature by administering the Force Phones and Gateways to Active LSPs field on the System-Parameters Ip-Options screen. You can force telephones and gateways to register with the main server or the LSP.
Split registrations occurring between a main server and LSPs or between an ESS and LSPs are managed by this feature. This feature does not handle split registration between a main server and an ESS.
Avaya™ Communication Manager 5.1 (06/08)
Enhancements
IP Endpoint Survivability
Some Avaya H.323 endpoints already have the ability to maintain more than one gateway IP address. This improves the survivability of these endpoints when the registered gateway fails; in this case the phone will try to re-register at an alternate gateway whose IP address is stored in the phone. Communication Manager 5.1 allows user administration of the default alternate gatekeeper lists which specify potential back-up gatekeepers for H.323 entities.
Serviceability
To assist with troubleshooting, by the customer, BusinessPartners, and Avaya Services, the following TN circuit packs now generate error logs which are stored centrally on Communication Manager:
- TN799DP (CLAN)
- TN2312AP/BP (IPSI)
- TN2602AP Media Processor (Crossfire)
Also, a List Measurements command is added to the SAT management interface to report on IPSI measurement data.
Telephony Features in EMEA
Customers in the EMEA region often use certain telephony features not available in Communication Manager. Two of these features are added to Communication Manager 5.1:
- Enhance the Team Button enhancements by allowing override for send all calls / call forward
- Call Completion to Busy Subscriber (CCBS) for incoming calls; basically ISDN Public Network Auto Call-back is an extension of CCBS work delivered in CM 5.0
Servers
Avaya S8510 Server
With Communication Manager 5.1, Avaya will be introducing the next generation of the S8500 Series Server. This is the follow-on server for the S8500C Server and has the same capacities as the S8500C.
The previous versions of the S8500 series server (A, B, & C) supported RAM Disk as a means to provide additional availability to the simplex server. The S8510 will not support RAM Disk but will come equipped with the hardware version of RAID level 1 feature that will be hot swappable.
RAID 1 utilizes a disk mirroring method which creates an identical set of data on two disks. RAID 1 contains two mirrored disks, increasing the availability of the system significantly over a single disk in a simplex system. Each of these disks is independent of each other and contains a complete copy of the data. If either disk fails, the other disk continues to function on its own until the failed disk is replaced. RAID 1 reduces the time needed to service a system. With RAID 1, when a disk fails, services can easily replace the disk without powering down the system.
Every S8510 will be equipped with the RAID 1 controllers and ship with two HDDs. A second hot-swappable power supply for the S8510 will be an orderable option.
New Avaya S8400B
The S8400B server is expected to launch at the end of June 2008. When released, the S8400B will be supported on CM 4.0.3, CM 5.x, and later releases. The S8400B server is very similar to the existing S8400 (A) with the following exceptions:
- The S8400B comes from the factory with 1 GB of DRAM and a 4 GB SSD installed. The S8400 (A) server comes from the factory with 512 MB of DRAM and a 2 GB SSD installed.
- The S8400B has a SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive and associated SATA interface hardware onboard. The S8400 (A) has the older style ATA hard drive and interface hardware. From an end user’s prospective, both drives are functionally equivalent but each type requires its own special software driver.
- There is no additional capacity or functionality in CM 5.1

Call Admission Control - Bandwidth Management
In order to ensure Quality of Service for Voice over IP calls, there is a need to limit overall VOIP traffic on the WAN links. This feature allows customer to specify a VOIP bandwidth limit between any pair of IP network regions and then deny calls that need to be carried over the WAN link that exceed that bandwidth limit.
Media Encryption using AES
Media encryption is used to provide enhanced privacy for VoIP communications. Using media encryption to encode the VoIP packets before they are sent onto the IP network reduces the risk of someone easily tapping into a call. This feature is particularly useful in LANs where VPNs are not used to secure a pipe as is normally the practice for WAN connectivity.
Communication Manager will employ the Advanced Encryption Standard 128 bit in Counter Mode (AES-128-CTR) and/or the 104-bit Avaya Encryption Algorithm (1.3) to encrypt the bearer channel
- between IP communications devices
- between Avaya between Avaya Communication Manager acting as a gatekeeper and the IP communication device
- between the Media Server and IP Server Interface (IPSI)connected port networks and
- between Media Gateways.
H.248 Link Encryption
Provide encryption to the link between Media Server and Media Gateways (G700 and G350).
E911 Enhancements
- Allow public service personnel to locate the 911 caller even when a user moves his IP phone or his extension to a different IP phone without telling the switch administrator.
- Allow public service personnel to call back to the person who called 911 if the call accidentally drops.
- Allow public service personnel to respond to the 911 call to locate the caller of 911 (from a bridged appearance call).
Multi-Level Precedence Pre-emption (MLPP)
This feature provides users the ability to interface and operate in a Defense System Network (DSN). Precedence Calling, the center piece of this feature allows certain users, on a call-by call basis, to select a level of priority for each call based on their need and importance. The call receives higher-priority routing, whether the call is local or going around the world.
This feature was originally developed to meet US Department of Defense Generic Switching Center Requirements (GSR) for connection to the DSN. MLPP is still a separately chargeable feature and is targeted to Government entities. This feature is not targeted for commercial segment at this time since it has various limitations in those environments.
Unicode Support
Unicode support provides the capability of supporting International and Multi-National communications solutions where end-users can be provided with a communications interface (delivered by an IP telephone or IP Softphone) in their own native language. The initial objective is to support Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Russian (CJR) character sets.
TTY over IP
This feature extends circuit-switched functionality to IP networks (e.g. Fax over IP). It enables Avaya to comply with Titles II, III, and IV of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Sections 251 and 255 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and Section 508 of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 for a pure IP solution.
Dial Plan: Duplicate Extension per Location
This feature will provide each location with flexibility regarding its dial plan while retaining an "integrated" cross-location dial plan at the same time. This provides customers with the ability to customize their extension, instead of having this extension tied to the default settings of the switch.
Dial Plan: Access to local Resource
This feature will provide customers with the ability to customize the ARS FAC (to get to an outside line) and play local announcement for each location instead of having these features tied to the default settings of the switch.
Dial Plan: Local dial Access code
This feature will provide customers with the ability to customize local operator access per location instead of having this feature tied to the default settings of the switch.
QSIG Multiple Hunt Group
Providing for multiple message center hunt groups to support QSIG integrated messaging will allow customers to spread users in a single CM system over multiple messaging systems as they can do today with Intuity messaging systems.
Authorization code by COR (green feature)
Please visit the Rapid Response team website at for ordering information since this is a separately purchased item.
- Restricts stations to only have access to a subset of valid authorization code
- Provide additional level of security
- Originating station COR must be given permission to use the access level provided by a valid auth codes COR
- Useful in campus environment with different user communities
AUDIX one-step Recording Enhancement
Users can record conversations by pressing a single button. This feature, which was originally introduced in 1.3, uses a locally connected AUDIX voice messaging system as the recording device. Only one AUDIX recording is allowed for each call. The button is available for all stations that have administrable feature buttons. As an improvement, this feature will now also work in 2.0 when a remotely networked switch (over DCS or QSIG) is connected to a centralized AUDIX attached to another switch.
